Dr. Zeenia Junkeer is a Naturopathic physician who specializes in public health programs and care that directly support community members who face the greatest inequities. Her work has taken her internationally which has provided an opportunity to learn about how global and public health practices often create a cascade of unintended consequences when programs, policies and care fail to take into account the experiences and wisdom of the community members they intend to serve. A passion for community health lead Dr. Zeenia to Haiti to join colleagues from NWB in working to build community capacity through empowerment and support of medical care aimed at treating the root cause of disease. Dr. Zeenia has a passion for community education programs, garden projects, contraception programs and teaching neonatal resuscitation for birth attendants or ‘Matwons’, all of which allowed her to merge her love of education and learning with clinical practice. This holistic approach to health empowers people to take control of their lives and their health which is vital to the success of sustainable wellness and access to information communities deserve regarding their well-being. In the U.S. Dr. Zeenia works as the CHW Program Coordinator at the Urban League of Portland and the Maternal and Child Health Project Lead at the Oregon Public Health Institute. She is also a board member of the Breastfeeding Coalition of Oregon (BCO). In her spare time she enjoys spending time in nature, hanging out with other people’s children and getting as close to a beach as possible.
